What is a FabLab?
A FabLab (Fabrication Laboratory) is an open, digital workshop where ideas can be turned into physical prototypes using technologies such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC and electronics tools. The concept originates from MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms in the early 2000s, where the goal was to give more people access to advanced production technology and a hands-on way of learning through experimentation.
FabLabs around the world are built on a common Fab Lab Charter. The Charter describes, among other things, that a FabLab should be a place for learning, innovation and knowledge sharing, that users should have the opportunity for open access to some extent, and that methods, experiences and projects are shared with others. At the same time the Charter emphasises responsible use of machines, safety in the workshop and respect for people, materials and ideas.
